WAR!!  To Arms, To Arms

The Barony of Vulcanfeldt once again is proud to bring you Baroness War, April 4-6, 2025 at the Grandview Event Center and Rodeo Grounds. Come and fight to your heart’s content. Armored fighters and archers come and gain word fame for your Baroness. This year’s war will guarantee you will get your fill of fighting to include open field, castle, bridge, and hill battles. If war fighting isn’t your thing enter into the prize tournaments (armored and rapier) on Sunday.

Prizes will be awarded for all other activities, including but not limited to Arts and Sciences, Bardic, Magdi’s Rock, Paper, Scissors tournament, and Sunday tournaments.

Come join the baron and baroness of Vulcanfeldt as they celebrate Vulcanfeldt’s 20th anniversary as a barony. The weekend celebrations include war scenarios, arts and sciences competitions and displays, archery, equestrian, rapier, classes, and more. Her Excellency Fiona welcomes all to join her for the Baroness’ Tea on Saturday. Contributions to the tea are always welcome.

War Scenarios:

All battles are 20 minutes long with unlimited lives. At the end of 20 minutes last life will be called. There will be a five (5) minute break between battles.
1st battle: Open Field with archery. Winner determined by last man standing.
2nd: Bridge Battle, no archery, no pole weapon over six (6) feet. A flag will be placed in the center of the bridge, a team must secure the flag and advance it to the opposite end of the bridge. Once done, the flag will be reset and the fighting will continue until time is up. The team that moves the flag to the opposite end of the bridge the most times wins.
3rd: Castle Battle with archery, no pole weapon over six (6) feet. Winner of the Bridge Battle will choose to be inside or outside of the castle. A flag will be placed 10 feet inside of the castle. Invaders must capture the flag and move it back outside the castle. Once outside the flag will be replaced and the battle will restart until time runs out. The team that captures the flag the most time wins.
4th: Bridge Battle with archery, no polearm restriction. Same scenario as the first bridge battle (scenario #2)
5th: Castle Battle, no archery, no pole weapons over six (6) feet. Team that was outside the castle during the first Castle Battle will be inside this time. Same scenario as the first castle battle (scenario #3)
6th: Open Field with Archery, no polearm weapon restrictions. Winner determined by last man standing.
7th: Zombie Castle Battle for those who still want to fight.

Siege weapons: Several of you have asked about siege weapons… There will be siege weapons allowed at Baroness War.

RV’s: If you are bringing an RV to Baroness War please contact the Event Steward with the Width, Length, and Height of your RV.

Introduction to SCA Heavy Fighting – Beginner’s Class
Presented by Hrafna
Step into the world of modern medieval armored combat! This class covers the basics of SCA heavy fighting, including a breakdown of the AnTir Book of Combat (the ABC), Armor, weapons, rules of the list, training and competing. Everything you need to know before your first fight practice.

Level up your Bardness with musicality! With Broklauss the singing short sword.
Presented by Broklauss Varangr
Instead of complaining about the darkness, light a candle! – Someone somewhere….
The journey to becoming a better musician can be hard. Fraught with self doubt, frustration and a feeling of being lost on a road to somewhere. It can also be one of the most rewarding, healing and wonderful skillsets one can learn in their lifetime. Lets discuss some things that will help act as a guiding light down that road.
Join me as we discuss how to make the most out of that journey. We will discuss things like: Making musical habits, practice tips and tricks, musical skillsets apart from your instrument/voice, how to make time as a busy adult, adopting the mindset to work past obstacles and last but not least some other stuff!
Bring your musical curiosity and I will see you there!

History of and introduction to Blackwork Embroidery. Will have opportunity to make own project.
Presented by Maestra Ciosa Fioravanti

Fencing, culture of control
Presented by HL Cem Hadar
A discussion about the importance of understanding why and how to gain the blade. As well as how universal it is as a concept.

Beginner Lucet
Presented by Lína Þyradóttír

Kumihimo
Presented by Kazuyama Kiyomoto and Kazuyama Kawa
It is an old Japanese art of brading cord. We will bring everything needed for that class. It’s very similar to how children make friendship bracelets, and was used to reinforce clothing, tie clothing and armor together. We will be bringing traditional Marudai looms and demonstrate the traditional method. We will also be bringing modern foam disc’s and showing the differences between modern and traditional.

Shibori resist dying. It is an art that uses rope or cord, and also wooden blocks and sometimes poles to create patterns in fabric. Please bring your own t shirt or towel or napkin. I will have some things to dye but if everyone brought an item or two that would help.

Storytelling Workshop – How to get Started in Storytelling
Presented by Rowena Jade of the Lion Isles
This interactive workshop will get brand new storytellers started, provide beginning storytellers with tips
and tricks for their storytelling toolbox and provide “continuing education” practice for experienced
storytellers.  If you have a story, you are working on, bring it to share and to work on with the class.
Poetry Workshop – Learn to Write Poetry using Rhyme, Rhythm and Meter
Presented by Rowena Jade of the Lion Isles
Get started in writing poetry! Learn how to structure and write poems through the concepts of rhyme,
rhythm and meter. Instructor will teach Common Meter – also known as Ballad Meter – students will
learn how to write verse for chant/recitation/song to promulgate the SCA Oral Tradition.
Depending on the students, the iambic tetrameter and pentameter will also be discussed as well as
Poetic forms that use the specified meters.
Bring writing implements and paper/notebooks.
If you have questions about any of the scheduled activities you may contact the Event Steward or the individual in charge of that activity (see Event Team listed below).

ARTS & SCIENCES:

All Contests on the Saturday of the War (April 5th) Drop off your entries and largess at 9:00 and come back and present them for judging at 11:00. This year there will be prizes donated by Her Excellency Ban Bharun Fiona Ingen Conchobair, of Vulcanfeldt, rather than war points.

Once again, our goal is Arts and Sciences for the JOY of it! Only one category requires documentation. We simply want to GEEK OUT together!

EXPERIENCED CATEGORY:
Documentation Required; Object/process/technique/science, explain it, and present to judge(s).
BEGINNER: Learn how to do an A&S entry. Never won an A&S competition before? Try this out: Object, process, technique, or science. This category has documentation and presentation strongly encouraged, because we want to geek out with you on what you did/learned! Show us what you did.
“SCA COOL”: A for the pure FUN of it project; sort of Medievalish, or inspired by historical stuff, but not terribly fussy about the authenticity of it; perhaps it is a useful item for SCA, though not period, but you’ve decorated it cleverly to disguise that. Documentation requirements are in casual mode; Tell us about the thing you made; source references are encouraged, but not required.
WORK IN PROGRESS: or one you rescued from the “Punishment Pile” and Finally Finished it! Like the SCA Cool category, you need to explain what you have going on with it, but super formal documentation is optional.
YOUTH CATEGORY: (Under the age of 18) as an object/process/technique/science; please write something to explain it and tell us all about what happened with it. Is this something that you’re super excited about? Did you learn a new thing you never tried before? Tell us! We want to hear.
b A new category, with a prize sponsored by Maestra Adrianna the Fierce; Either something you’ve made since last Baroness War, or something you’ve never entered in any A&S before.
DISPLAY ONLY: Do you have an item you do not want to present? You can do Display Only!
Populace Votes for the winner.
LARGESS SUPER SIX: Half a dozen Largess Items (multiples are great). Populace Votes for the winner.
STUCK?: This is not a contest, but do you have a project that is driving you crazy? Would you like a consultation after the contests are over? Bring it and let’s geek out about it!
Questions? Ask the Baroness War Arts & Sciences Coordinator: Dana Chathair Saibhin (“Spritzie”)
